Biodiesel Fuel Additives
While biodiesel in itself has made enough of an impact on the fuel market, biodiesel fuel additives has helped shape the current form of our fuel market even more. These biodiesel additives make it possible to create different blends of biodiesel. And since there is a very significant amount of research and live application of these additives, these fuel blending operations are currently enjoying some widespread exposure and use, being adopted by a larger and larger section of the market.
Essentially, biodiesel is a very special type of fuel that is made up of mono-alkyl esters comprised of long chain fatty acids. They are usually produced from vegetable oil or even animal fats (as a byproduct). While biodiesel alone is being used with great success for a wide variety of applications, there have been some problems arising with it during specific outlying applications. Some of the characteristics that are unique to biodiesel (fatty acid methyl esters) have shown to create operation problems, such as low-temperature fluidity, water haze, and thermal and oxidation stability. The problems associated with these factors are causing biodiesel end users some costly problems.
However, thanks to a range of specific additives, some of these problems are being corrected through very simple front end methods and processes. Elements such as glycerol content, free fatty acid content, metals and carbon-carbon double bond types, and configurations regarding saturation are being closely researched in order to provide simple additives that will grant end users much more confidence in using biodiesel for their specific applications.
